5 Handy Tips for Using Your Hilotherm After Knee Surgery

1. Start Using Your Hilotherm Device Early

We would recommend having your cooling device delivered and ready to use for the day that you return home from hospital. If you have been using Hilotherm in the hospital following your procedure you won’t want to wait to continue using it. Early use helps control inflammation during the crucial first 48–72 hours. The system’s steady temperature is far more comfortable and effective than traditional ice packs.

Tip: Have your Hilotherm set up before you return home so it’s ready as soon as you are.

2. Start Your Device 20 Minutes Before Use

To ensure the system reaches the desired temperature, we recommend switching on the device around 20 minutes before you plan to use it. This allows the cooled water to circulate fully through the cuff.

Tip: Let the water flow through the cuff for the full 20 minutes before strapping it onto your knee for optimal cooling performance.

3. Set The Correct Temperature

Following knee surgery, we recommend setting your Hilotherm temperature between 15°C and 18°C. This range provides effective cooling while remaining comfortable and safe for prolonged use.

Tip: The cooling should feel soothing, not uncomfortably cold

4. Maintain Consistent Cooling Sessions

Hilotherm is safe to use continuously for as long as necessary. Regular use at a consistent precise temperature is what delivers the best results. Many patients benefit from continuous cooling in the first few days, then scheduled intervals as recovery progresses.

Tip: The temperature range provided by the Hilotherm cooling device is safe to be used for as long as you feel necessary, unlike ice, there is no risk to continuous use.

5. Be Careful Not To Fit The Knee Cuff Too Tightly

In order for the water to flow freely through the knee cuff and remain at the desired temperature, it is important not to fit the knee cuff too tightly. If the flow of water is impinged then the cuff will not be able to cool continuously.

Tip: Make sure that the water is still flowing through the cuff once it is strapped on to the knee.
